The College offers various types of academic assistance. The Office of Academic Support (OAS) is dedicated to enhancing student success by offering free comprehensive academic assistance to all CSI students. OAS fulfills this mission through a variety of initiatives and learning modalities: classroom, online and supplemental instruction, workshops and multidisciplinary tutoring.
The Bridge Programs are intensive workshops that provide an opportunity for students who need to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics, want to prepare themselves for college-level Algebra work or brush up on other subjects to receive tuition-free instruction during the summer and/or January intersession. Students are placed into these programs based on the CUNY Proficiency Index. This index combines overall high school grade point average with SAT and Regents scores to determine whether students can succeed in a credit-bearing math or English course without any additional support.
The Center for Academic Student Assistance also offers walk-in tutoring, both on campus and online, in the following subjects: English, math, computer science, physics, psychology, history, chemistry, engineering, accounting, finance, geology, astronomy, philosophy, and linguistics.
CUNY Start at the College of Staten Island is a low-cost, intensive remediation program for students who have been accepted to the College of Staten Island but still need to pass two or more sections of the CUNY Assessment tests. CUNY Start offers rigorous, semester long academic preparation in math and/or reading and writing. In addition, participants receive academic advisement and develop skills to help them succeed in college.
